The police are doing their best to stay neutral. Chief Superintendent Tim Stokes of Essex Police said: "Mistakes have been made by police forces in the past but we are absolutely clear that our role is to prevent bailiffs breaking the law as much as it is to prevent supporters and travellers acting illegally." -

Ruth - the woman chained to the car in the picture below - says: "There are people here from all over the world and the travellers have made us so welcome. It has become increasingly difficult for travellers to find a site in recent years. Planning law is very discretionary and we do not feel it's being used fairly." -
