The Association of School and College Leaders said there seemed to be a particular problem with C/D borderline grades in English, with pupils who were expecting Cs ending up with Ds. -

Professor Alan Smithers, of the Centre for Education and Employment Research at Buckingham University, predicted the overall pass rate will stall this year. -

Prof Smithers said: “It's the first time it (new science GCSE) is being examined this year so we might expect to see a fall in various grades in science. If you put all that together, I think the results this year will be similar to last year, with some improvement." -

Glenys Stacey, chief executive of the qualifications regulator Ofqual, said: "Our job is make sure exam results are right. What we have done this year, and last year, is to hold the line on standards steady." -
She went on: "If the qualification and the type of student is broadly the same, then results will be broadly the same. Any difference in results in English or other subjects will reflect differences in the make-up of the group taking the exam, in terms of the numbers or their abilities." -
